Mark J. "Beef" Helland, 64, of Morris, passed away early Saturday morning, June 17, 2017 at Christ Advocate Medical Center in
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 10:30 am at the Stavanger Lutheran Church with Rev. Philip Peterson
officiating. Interment will follow in Stavanger Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 pm until 7:00
pm at the Fruland Funeral Home, 121 W. Jefferson St., in Morris.
Born May 5, 1953 in Ottawa, he was the son of Allen and M. Jeanette (Roberts) Helland. He attended Nettle Creek and Morris
Elementary School and graduated from Morris Community High school with the class of 1972. Mark was a loving brother, uncle,
friend whose attributes included a positive attitude, sense of humor, beautiful smile, a hearty laugh and he would do anything for
everyone. He was a hard working man who devoted his life to his family and work.
As a young man Mark worked for Stott Body Shop for a number of years then went on to work in the Wedron area to build
Morton buildings with Howard Temple. Mark joined the crew at Ritchie Brothers when they came to town and has enjoyed
employment there since.
Mark loved being surrounded by people and was a friend to all. After high school and into young adulthood ”Beefs Trailer” was
the place to be. As his siblings families grew, he was there to be part of the rearing of those nieces and nephews however he
He was a Morris Redskins football fan. He enjoyed collecting coins, gardening, fishing, cooking and going to flea markets and
auctions. He often shared coins with nieces and nephews and ”set up” their poles for fishing outings.
Mark was passionate about family events, meals and athletic activities of nieces and nephews. He especially enjoyed coffee
every weekend morning with Sarah & Scott where many fishing outings, auction or flea market trips were planned and daily he’d
stop at the coroner of Pine & Main just to see what everbodys’ up to.
Mark is survived by 3 sisters, Susan Knott of SC and her children Rob (Dorothy) of Italy, Dannette (John) Gates of CA., Amy
Lime of SC and Jim; Barbara (Danny) Hoffman of Morris and their children Kim Gordon, Sarah (Scott) Slater, Phoebe (Mike)
Weitzel, Ben (Jennifer), Danny (Molly); Jo (Leo) Newman and their daughter Tammy (Greg) Kjellesvik; 2 brothers, David and his
children Amanda (Mitch) Twait, Lauren, Zachary; Paul (Georgia) many great nieces and nephews, 1 aunt Bev Hohenshell of
Havana and numerous cousins.
Preceded in death by his parents; 1 sister in infancy; 2 nephews; 1 sister-in-law, Mary Anne Helland; 1 brother-in-law, Jim Knott.
He was a member of Stavanger Lutheran Church.
Memorials may be given to the Stavanger Lutheran Church.
